Zbog neznanih razloga , zemljino unutrašnje jezgro prestalo se rotirati , zbog čega se elektromagnetno polje planete počinje nestabilno ponašati . Širom celog sveta dolazi do dramatičnih događaja i promena . Pokušavajući da reše svakim danom sve veću krizu , vladini i vojni zvaničnici pozivaju geofizičara Josha Keies ( Aaron Eckhart ) kako bi predvodio tim najnadarenijih svetskih naučnika na putovanju duboko u Zemljinu jezgru . Njihovim modernim vozilom upravljaju Rebecca Čajlds ( Hilari Svank ) i Robert Iverson ( Bruce Greenvood ) , a misija ima jasan zadatak - detonira nuklearnu bombu koja će reaktivirati jezgru i spase svet od uništenja .
