Kath, sramežljiva mlada žena, sprijatelji se s Bobom, povučenim vrtlarom u hotelu na obali gdje se udaje. Kath se nikada nije pomirila s tim da je njezina majka otišla od kuće kad je imala osam godina i da njezin oholi otac Ken nikada ne govori o njoj. Sada se udaje kako bi pobjegla, samo da bi otkrila da njezinom zaručniku Steve-u također dominira Ken. Bob je nježan, ekscentričan čovjek suhoparnog smisla za humor i problematične prošlosti. Dugo je proveo vreme u zatvoru, a u godinama koje je proveo u hotelu nikada nije izašao dalje od vrtova koje opsesivno njeguje. Kath potakne vezu s nerazriješenom vezom iz Bobove prošlosti s djevojkom po imenu Louise, što odjekne tako snažno da se on osjeća prisiljen napustiti sigurnost hotela i suočiti se sa svojom prošlošću.
